Pilots for this flight in California and Nevada - Dave (host), Mike, Steve and Troph. We began the flight at Redding Muni (CA) KRDD. Chico Muni KCIC, was our second T&G. I had spent a day/night in Chico California in 1975 with my family. Memories were of drought and controlled water usage. This leads us next to the featured Oroville Dam, just a few miles away from KOVE Oroville Muni.
Here ae some pictures from my side trip to the dam, as well as some Bing storytelling.
The full width of the dam and spillway. I had turned around and was flying back toward KOVE Oroville.
In February 2017, two spillways at the Oroville Dam in Northern California began to disintegrate under the force of water rushing down them. Officials were concerned that erosion might undermine the side of the reservoir itself, and more than 180,000 people were evacuated An internal analysis by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers concluded that the spillway failure was likely caused by problems with its underlying drainage system and the soils beneath the concrete chute. Since then, the main and emergency spillways have been fully reconstructed to modern engineering standards to be able to handle flows necessary for flood protection of downstream communities. The rebuilt main spillway was first utilized on April 2, 2019 and was successful in sustaining a flow of 25,000 cubic feet per second In 2020, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave a nod to the Oroville Dam rebuild and called it an outstanding civil engineering project.
Another, or maybe additional to the main structure, small dam and spillway I passed over on my way back to KOVE Muni.
The next airport on our flight was Yuba Co KMYV, which would have been one of the towns/cities downstream of the Oroville dam if it had collapsed and flooded the valley.
In this screenshot I am waiting for Troph to depart our break and midway stop, KAUN, Auburn Muni.
Good looking bridge to the left
Near Lake Tahoe I had snow on the ground which mmde the ski slopes visible.
Good one Dave......
